You see it a lot these days. Now that face-to-face coaching appointments are not feasible anymore, technology offers an alternative to continue to communicate online. Video calls are on the rise. However, facilitating an online video connection with your client does not immediately mean the coaching engagement will end up successful. Online coaching and guidance is a discipline in our field and does require a thorough, well thought through approach. eCoachPro (eCP) is a Dutch founded company that built its expertise in this discipline in the last eleven years. You can hardly ignore it. Over the past few weeks, various video services have been offering their services at low prices or even for free. And the coaching industry is jumping on it en masse. For us, integrating online communication with traditional coaching is our default. 

Sustainable and efficient 

Our clients are mainly looking for sustainable and effective results. On top some efficiency in the process is definitely a pre. Given the rapid technological changes and the emergence of the 24-hour economy, e-coaching is an inevitable phenomenon for any professional who coaches or supports people in their professional development. The addition of online can enable increased contact frequency which leads to increased involvement. It helps to keep your client's development goal, in the daily relevant context, on top-of-mind. In this way, we speed up coaching processes by tailoring them perfectly to the client's circumstances and needs. 

Embedding in daily reality 

In order to achieve sustainable results, learning and development is best embedded in the daily reality of the client. By using e-coaching, the process becomes time- and location-independent and easily accessible. At the same time, the use of technology, web tools and the internet in daily coaching practice requires new skills, but also a new attitude on the part of the coach. It demands a different kind of role and also implies to embrace and learn new skills. This is because the total engagement becomes continuous by nature and the dynamics of the coaching relationship changes.

The three basic pillars of e-coaching 

When you ask people why they would offer online services to clients, you usually hear arguments like "flexibility" and "lowering costs" (besides of course the restrictions due to Covid-19). Hence, the arguments described above (increased contact frequency, strong commitment, better alignment with needs) are also important. They make the big difference. And in addition, there are some other, profound fundamental elements why online working has a significant added value to only working traditionally face to face. 

These three fundamental elements are:

  1. A-synchronicity 

By communicating asynchronously, coaching and guidance can take place independently of time and place. The client can work on his development objective whenever and wherever it suits him best. The process can exist of several and frequent contact moment in time. This creates a continuous dialogue supporting a continuous development process, consisting of a continuous flow of exercises, reflection work, feedback and reinforcement moments. 

  1. Social anonymity

Social anonymity refers to the possibility for the client to work in his own private and (thus) safe environment. Where no socially desirable behaviour is required. The client does not have to tune in to the (non)verbal reaction of the coach. This makes boundaries disappear and "open communication" easier. On other words, inhibition decreases and disclosure increases.

3. The power of writing

The power of writing was already proven by the research of psychologist-researcher Pennebaker (years ago). He showed how this way of expression leads to profound changes in existing cognitions and emotions. Expressing yourself by writing structures your thoughts, give you access to your emotions and stimulates your reflective capacity. Moreover, the asynchronous factor - created by writing - makes it possible to have more frequent contact with your client and therefor work towards the desired situation in small steps, which is according the natural way people learn.
